Rhythmic analysis and quantitative measures: the essence of rhythm as temporal patterning

چکیده

A comparison of Standard Italian and Southern Italian dialects is carried out using acoustic measures related to structural properties: Vowel-interval and consonantal inter-vowel-interval durations are used to obtain rhythmic measures based on a number of approach. Italian is usually considered to be ‘syllable-timed’. The structural features found in the dialects offer support for a divergence from the traditional assumption of syllable-timing. Rhythm measures are calculated according to Ramus at al. 1999, Grabe-Low 2002, Barry et al. 2003, Russo-Barry to appear. In agreement with predictions derived from phonological observation, the results of the measures show a ‘rhythm plot’ in which the ‘Pairwise Variability Indices (PVIs) place the Italian dialect speakers nearer to the stress-timed’ languages than traditional typology statements would lead one to expect .

A multimodal spectral approach to characterize rhythm in natural speech.

Human utterances demonstrate temporal patterning, also referred to as rhythm. While simple oromotor behaviors (e.g., chewing) feature a salient periodical structure, conversational speech displays a time-varying quasi-rhythmic pattern. Quantification of periodicity in speech is challenging. Unimodal spectral approaches have highlighted rhythmic aspects of speech. However, speech is a complex mu...

The musical language Elements of Persian musical language: modes, rhythm and syntax

In treating the subject of musical language, a Persian musician would be intrinsically drawn to the structural similarities between the Persian music and language. Indeed Persian music and language are extremely related in their metrics, intonations and structural phrases (syntax). Although we will draw upon this relationship, our aim in this article is to present “music as a language,” c...

Rhythmic patterning in Malaysian and Singapore English.

Previous work on the rhythm of Malaysian English has been based on impressionistic observations. This paper utilizes acoustic analysis to measure the rhythmic patterns of Malaysian English. Recordings of the read speech and spontaneous speech of 10 Malaysian English speakers were analyzed and compared with recordings of an equivalent sample of Singaporean English speakers. Analysis was done usi...

Homayoun as a Persian Music Scale on Non-Musician’s Brain: an fMRI Study

Introduction: The aim of this study was to get to a neurological evaluation of one of the Persian music scales, Homayoun, on brain activation of non-musician subjects. We selected this scale because Homayoun is one of the main scales in Persian classical music which is similar to minor mode in western scales. Methods: This study was performed on 19 right handed subjects, Aging 22-31. Here some ...

Modelling Rhythm Perception by Continuous Time-Frequency Analysis

The use of linear phase Gabor transform wavelets is demonstrated as a robust analysis technique capable of making explicit many elements of human rhythm perception behaviour. Transforms over a continuous time-frequency plane (the scalogram) spanning rhythmic frequencies (0.1 to 100Hz) capture the multiple periodicities implied by beats at diierent temporal relationships. Wavelets represent well...
